A mountain trip is only as good as its base. Stay in the right town and you’re at the trailhead, the lake or the cable car before the tour buses arrive. Stay in the wrong one and you spend your days in traffic. This guide compares the most popular mountain bases for travelers from North America.
Canadian Rockies
The Alps
US Rockies and Sierra
More US bases: Estes Park, Breckenridge, Vail, Telluride, Steamboat Springs and Big Sky.
More: Grindelwald, Chamonix Lauterbrunnen, St. Moritz, Verbier, Hallstatt, Innsbruck and our Swiss Alps base comparison.
Ask for the view side: in mountain hotels, rooms facing the peak or the lake can cost a little more than those facing the street or the slope, and they are the ones you’ll remember. See our mountain hotel tips.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better for a mountain trip, the Rockies or the Alps?
The Canadian Rockies are about wild national parks, lakes and wildlife, usually with a car. The Alps offer car-free villages, mountain railways and cable cars that take you high without hiking, plus easy train travel between bases.
When is the best time to book a mountain hotel?
As early as you can for July, August and the Christmas–New Year period. In Banff and Zermatt, the best-located hotels often sell out months ahead.
Is HotelMountains a hotel?
No. HotelMountains is an independent travel guide. We don't own, run or represent any hotel. Bookings are made with our booking partners.
