Lake Tahoe is a huge alpine lake high in the Sierra Nevada. It is a ski destination in winter and a lake holiday in summer, so the best base depends on the season.

Our top pick: Emerald Bay Sightseeing Cruise

Where to stay at Lake Tahoe

  • South Lake Tahoe: the biggest choice of hotels, restaurants and beaches, and close to Emerald Bay and the southern ski areas.
  • Tahoe City and the west shore: relaxed lakeside towns, good for walking, paddling and the northern ski resorts.
  • Incline Village and the north-east shore: quieter, with Sand Harbor and some of the clearest water.
  • Truckee: a historic mountain town about 15 miles north of the lake with easy access to ski areas.

Book the shore, not just the hotel: driving between the south and north ends takes well over an hour, so pick a base that matches most of your plans.
