Banff is the only town inside Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park, established in 1885. Most hotels line Banff Avenue and the streets around it, with Cascade Mountain rising at the end of the main street. It’s the most convenient base for Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the Icefields Parkway.

Our top pick: Lake Louise, Moraine, Emerald Lake and Johnston Canyon

Where to stay

Area Pros Cons
Downtown Banff Walk to restaurants, shops, buses Busier, higher prices in summer
Tunnel Mountain Quieter lodges, views, nature Need the bus or a car
Canmore (outside the park) More choice, often cheaper 20–25 min drive to Banff
Lake Louise village Closest to the famous lakes Very few hotels, little evening life

Moraine Lake by shuttle only: the road to Moraine Lake is closed to personal vehicles. Book the Parks Canada shuttle in advance, or join a tour that includes both lakes.
